Katarina Witt started to ice skate when she was 5 years. She was only five when her talents became apparent, and at the age of Karl-Marx-Stadt she enrolled in an institution specifically designed for children who have athletic talents. They got to know Jutta Muller in this school. Witt was able to make her mark in 1982, after she was second in the World Championships at Copenhagen. Since that time, her grace and elegance attracted the attention of everyone. She began to dominate this sport. Olympic Success In the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984, Katarina won the gold medal for figure skating in women's after a fiercely contested contest. Four years later, she won an even tighter contest. While she was unable to win the free-skating competition, the medal was given to her for her performances on the mandatory figures and the program in short form. Witt became the first woman to take home a gold medal in both women's and men's figure-skating ever since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame Witt competed at Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 following her successful run acting. Although she didn't get a single medal she enchanted fans despite her seventh place finish. Witt was named to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame by the members of it in 1995.
